About Us
The Wingate Club was the dream of its owner, Peter Graham, in the early 1990s. He purchased the land in Wingate Street, that was at the far end of the street at that time, built the buildings himself and on 28 November 1992 opened the business for the first time.
Since then there have been a number of changes, both in the business and in the street. The street has been extended and many houses built. The number of customers has significantly increased since those early days and a number of the original customers still regularly visit.
A larger steam room and changes to the sauna areas were created in 2000, and the shower area was rebuilt in 2010. Continual changes have been made to the large grounds over the years to improve and extend the amenities available.
The Wingate Club is more than just a bathhouse--it prides itself on being a friendly "Club" where customers can meet, and relax, sit and chat as well as the having the normal bathhouse facilities. We also pride ourselves on having the lowest entry fees in New Zealand.
Prior to 25 May 2013, the Club had been open every single day, including all public holidays. However, on 25 May 2013 a fire which started in the dry sauna, caused a significant amount of damage and the Club was closed for four weeks and reopened with much reduced facilities on 29 June 2013. Since then all facilities have been restored. All facilities were fully reopened on 1 June 2015.
The Wingate Club remains committed to providing an excellent, friendly and safe place for gay and bi men to meet.
